First attested as Werghen in 1866. Etymology uncertain. The toponym is hard to interpret due to a paucity of old attestations. Potentially a compound of Old Dutch *warg (“willow, Salix”) and heri (“sandy ridge”). Perhaps related to dialectal werkhout (“willow wood”). Compare Werchter.
