Etymology

Due to the uncanny resemblance, as well as the peculiarly Japanese-sounding name for Egypt, perhaps calque of Japanese 出エジプト記 (Shutsu-Ejiputo-ki, literally “Chronicle of the Departure from Egypt”). Compare Chinese 出埃及記／出埃及记 (Xuất Ai Cập kí) and Korean 출애굽기 (Churaegupgi). Most proper names in the Vietnamese Protestant translation of the Bible were derived from French, however, the French title French livre de l’Exode seems implausible here since Exode only biblically implies "departure from Egypt", compared to the Catholic title Xuất hành which is more general. Ê-díp-tô could also be from Portuguese "Egito", as there are many Catholic transliterations from Portuguese, for example, 基移吹蘇 Kirixitô for Portuguese rendition of Christ 'Christo' in Catholic chữ Nôm texts.
