Proto-Celtic *Monā (Latin Mona).

Cognate with the Celtic names of other isles, from Proto-Celtic *moniyos (related to Welsh mynydd, Cornish menydh, Breton menez), from Proto-Indo-European *men- (to tower, stand out) (compare Latin mōns).

Usage notes[edit]

"Anglesey" as a place is also often referred to by Welsh speakers as Sir Fôn, literally "The County of Anglesey". It is occasionally referred to as simply Môn, especially in phrases such as Môn Mam Cymru.
