Etymology[edit]
From Middle Welsh Ystradwel, from Old Welsh Stradwel, Stradwawl, possibly from Old Welsh strat (“valley”), from Proto-Brythonic *strad, Proto-Celtic *stratos[1] + Old Welsh guaul (“rampart, boundary”), from Proto-Brythonic *gwọl, from Proto-Celtic *wālos (“hedge, enclosure”).[2]
