From Middle High German zēhe, from Old High German zēha, from Proto-Germanic *taihwǭ (“toe”), from Proto-Indo-European *deyḱ- (“to point out”).

- Masculine gender is predominant in Ripuarian, feminine gender in Moselle Franconian. As a masculine the plural may be Ziehe or more commonly unchanged Zieh, as a feminine it is always Ziehe.
