Etymology[edit]

Middle High German ziestac, from Old High German ziestag, ciesdac, from Proto-West Germanic *Tīwas dag (literally Tiw's day), a calque of Latin diēs Mārtis (literally day of Mars). Cognate with English Tuesday, West Frisian tiisdei, Swedish tisdag.
