a- +‎ mål, first part is referring to the letter A being used as a grammatical ending. Last part from Old Norse mál (language, speech), from Proto-Germanic *maþlą (gathering; speech), of *mōtaną (to be allowed, to be permitted to, may), from Proto-Indo-European *mōd- (to permit, make able), of *med- (to measure, give advice, heal).
