English[edit]

Noun[edit]

afternoon farmer (plural afternoon farmers)

  1. A lazy farmer who puts off work until absolutely necessary.
    • 1822, Arthur Young, The Farmer's Calendar, page 348:
Bad weather now greatly injures his profit; he must have many hands at work to make the best use of fine seasons, or he will gain the name of an afternoon farmer.
    • 1844, British Farmer's Magazine, volume 8, page 65:
Many good practical directions are given for preparing the land and sowing the wheat crop; but Master Tusser was not an afternoon farmer. He was for taking time by the forelock, and was undoubtedly a friend to early sowing.
