Etymology[edit]

From Contraction of àgbámùréré. Originally referring to the roan antelope and other species large antelope in the savanna of Northern Yorubaland, its definition has now been extended to the rhinoceros in modern usage. Rhinoceroses never live in what is now Yorubaland.
