Etymology[edit]

From Old Galician-Portuguese aguillon (sting) + -ada (-ing, -er: forming nouns related to striking), attested in the 13th century Cantigas de Santa Maria, from aculeus (sting). Doublet of aguilhão. Cognate with Galician aguillada.
