From ā- +‎ *hlocian, *holcian, from Proto-West Germanic *holhukōn, *hulhikōn (to hollow out), related to Proto-West Germanic *hulhikjan (to create a concavity, cause to bend, curve). Cognate with Middle Low German holken, hȫlken (to hollow out, gouge).
