Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Tocharian *āknātsā, from *e(n)- + a reflex of Proto-Indo-European *n̥-ǵneh₃-to-, *n̥-ǵneh₃-tih₂, from *ǵneh₃- (know), meaning something like "unknowing". Compare Sanskrit अज्ञात (ájñāta, unknown), Latin ignōtus (unknown; ignorant), Ancient Greek ἄγνωτος (ágnōtos, unknown; ignorant). Compare Tocharian A āknats.
