Inherited from Old Galician-Portuguese aljoufar, from Arabic الجَوْهَر (al-jawhar, jewel, pearl), from Persian گوهر (gowhar, jewel, pearl), from Middle Persian gwhl (gōhr, substance, essence; jewel), from Old Persian *gauθra, *gavaθra, from Proto-Indo-European. Cognate with Galician alxofre and Spanish aljófar.
