From French amollissement, from amolliss- [extended stem of amollir (to soften, verb), from a- {from Latin ad (to)} + mollir, from French mou, or from Latin mollīre (to make soft, soften)] + -ment (suffix forming nouns from verbs) [from Late Latin -mentum, from Latin -menta]; equivalent to English amollish (see Middle English amolisshen) + -ment.
