French[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Inherited from Old French amortir, from Vulgar Latin *admortīre, derived from Latin mortuus (dead). By surface analysis, a- +‎ mort +‎ -ir.

Pronunciation[edit]

  • IPA(key): /a.mɔʁ.tiʁ/
  • (file)

Verb[edit]

amortir

  1. to cushion, absorb, soften (shock, blow etc.)
  2. to deaden, muffle (noise)
  3. (finance) to pay off, amortize; to redeem (a title)
  4. (architecture) to put an amortizement on

Conjugation[edit]

This is a regular verb of the second conjugation, like finir, choisir, and most other verbs with infinitives ending in -ir. One salient feature of this conjugation is the repeated appearance of the infix -iss-.
