Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Germanic *andawlitiz, equivalent to and (against, off) + wlite (aspect, appearance, looks). Cognate with Old Norse andlit (Swedish anlete, Norwegian Nynorsk andlet) and Old High German antlizzi (German Antlitz).
