Etymology[edit]

From Proto-West Germanic *ainawīg, variant of *ainawīgī, from Proto-Germanic *ainawīgiją. Equivalent to ān- (solo) +‎ wīġ (battle), so called because it was between single individuals, rather than groups or armies.
