Etymology[edit]

From an Algonquian language term for "something to sit on". Compare Cree ᐊᐢᐹᐏᑲᓀᐦᐃᑲᐣ (aspaawikanehikan, saddle blanket) and Ojibwe apishimon/apishamon (something to lie down upon).[1][2]
