  1. (military, of devices, typically weapons) Intended to prevent an adversary from occupying or traversing a certain area of land.
    An area-denial mine might not kill a soldier, but will severely restrict, slow down, or endanger a tank. Many area-denial weapons continue to pose risks to civilians, years after they were first set up.
