Etymology[edit]

A minced oath, with (B) being the first letter of bölvaður (cursed!) and the latter half being derived from the (now uncommon) curse word ansvítans.

Ansvítans is an adjective derived from ansvíti (a contraction of andskoti (devil) and helvíti (hell)) that imitates the ending of andskotans.
