From Arabic أَبْزار (ʔabzār, spice). The specific sense “pepper” also in Moroccan Arabic بزار (bzār). Compare further the unrelated but similar-sounding Arabic بَهار (bahār, spice), whence North Levantine Arabic بهار (bhār, pepper).
