Basque[edit]
Etymology[edit]
Perhaps from a hypothetical stem *bain-, in that case related to baina (“but”).[1]
Pronunciation[edit]
Audio (file)
- IPA(key): (Navarro-Lapurdian) /bai̯no/ [bai̯.no]
- IPA(key): (Southern) /baɲo/ [ba.ɲo]
- (Navarro-Lapurdian) Rhymes: -ai̯no
- (Southern) Rhymes: -aɲo
- Hyphenation: bai‧no
Particle[edit]
baino
- than
- Ni baino altuagoa da. ― (S)he’s taller than me.

Usage notes[edit]
- Placed immediately after the basis of comparison. When the basis is an adjective or an adverb, it takes the comparative form (with the suffix -ago).
- When the same adjective is used in both sides of the comparison, the adjective is emphasized:
- Prest baino prestago nago. ― I'm more than ready. (literally, “I'm more ready than ready.”)
Derived terms[edit]
- baino ere (“than (intensified)”)
- baino lehen (“before”)
- bainoago (“more than”)
Conjunction[edit]

- (chiefly Biscayan) but
- Synonym: baizik
- Ez naiz bere anaia, bere laguna baino. ― I'm not his brother, but his friend.
- (chiefly Biscayan) only, just
- Ez ikaratu, katua baino ez da. ― Don't freak out, it's just our cat.
