M. Asfandi Adul hypothesizes an ultimately Dravidian source (compare Tamil அப்பா (appā)), with a native b- element descended from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *aba. See also Ashokan Prakrit *𑀩𑀸𑀧𑁆𑀧 (*bāppa, “father”).
