From Javanese ꦧꦲꦸꦱꦱ꧀ꦠꦿ (bahusastra, dictionary), from Old Javanese bahuśāstra (knowing many books or sciences), from Sanskrit बहु (bahu, great) +‎ शास्त्र (śāstra, scripture). Reconstructed as bahu +‎ sastra.
