Alternative forms[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Borrowed through Vulgar Latin from Latin benedicō (to bless, praise). A more phonologically conserved variant is bënkoj, whereas the standard form was possibly affected by be (oath) considering the lack of reduction of the unstressed vowel.[2][3]

Pronunciation[edit]
