Of unknown origin. Suggestions have included Proto-Indo-European *bekione (double, partner), Latin *bissōne (double), and a pre-Roman *bikione related to Basque biki (twin), biko (pair), and bikun (double). Compare Franco-Provençal besson, Occitan besson and Piedmontese bësson
