Of unknown origin. Suggestions have included Proto-Indo-European *bekione (“double, partner”), Latin *bissōne (“double”), and a pre-Roman *bikione related to Basque biki (“twin”), biko (“pair”), and bikun (“double”). Compare Franco-Provençal besson, Occitan besson and Piedmontese bësson
