From Proto-Cushitic. Phonology suggests immediate cognates to be Burunge ma'ay and Iraqw ma'ay. Possibly originally *māya, then underwent a consonant shift from /m/ to /b/, and a few vowel shifts (*mīya- > *mīyo- > *bīyo-. Compare Arbore biče and Oromo bishaan.
