Etymology[edit]
A playful derivation probably from the back-vowel pair of the dialectal bec, bece (“calf”) + -i (diminutive suffix).[1][2]

From boace or from a Vulgar Latin root *vōcīre, from alteration of *vōceāre, from Latin vōx, possibly influenced by vagīre. Compare Aromanian butsescu, butsiri; cf. also Italian bociare, Spanish vocear.
