Alternative forms[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Possibly West Saxon form of Anglian *breoðen, from Proto-West Germanic *broþ, from Proto-Germanic *bruþą (broth) + *-īną (diminutive suffix, literally small brewing), or from *bruþijaną (to make a broth) + *-īniz (noun-forming suffix). In either case, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *bʰrewh₁- (to boil, brew).
