Etymology[edit]

From earlier *burburqe, pluralized form of *burbuk, a formation with root doubling, from Proto-Indo-European *bher- (to roar, buzz) (onomatopoeic). Compare Ancient Greek πεμφρηδών (pemphrēdṓn, kind of wasp), Sanskrit बम्भर (bambhara, bee) and Lithuanian barbė́ti (clang, clink).
