Borrowed from Spanish cáñamo, from Late Latin cannabum, from Latin cannabis, from Ancient Greek κάνναβις (kánnabis). Compare the inherited Old Portuguese cánamo, cánabo, or the inherited Portuguese cânave. Doublet of canábis and cânabis.
