Borrowed from Ancient Greek καθετήρ (kathetḗr, “surgical instrument for emptying the bladder”), from καθίημι (kathíēmi, “to descend, let down”) + -τήρ (-tḗr, “suffix forming masculine nouns from verbs”) (from Proto-Indo-European *-tḗr (“suffix forming agent nouns from verbs, denoting someone or something whose role or purpose it is to perform the verb's action”)).
