Etymology[edit]

Literally, whatever is born out of cat, it is mice that it eats. Attested for the first time, in a slightly different form, as the subtitle of Nicolae Filimon's 1862 novel Ciocoii vechi și noi: "Ce naște din pisică șoareci mănâncă".
