Unknown, but apparently related to Low German Ködik, Köddik (charlock). Compare also Middle Low German hēderik, hederik, hedderik (charlock), Old High German hederīh (hedge mustard, charlock), possibly from Latin hederāceus (made of ivy, ivy-like).
