Uncertain. Perhaps from dialectal chaba (old, scrawny horse) +‎ -ina. Compare Czech chabý (weak), from Proto-Slavic *xabъ. Alternatively borrowed from Ukrainian кабани́на (kabanýna). If so, doublet of kabanina (pork).
