From Portuguese coquilho, Spanish coquillo, diminutive of coco (a coconut).

coquilla nut (plural coquilla nuts)

  1. The fruit of a Brazilian palm tree (Attalea funifera of Martius), whose hard dense shell is used by turners to make ornamental articles.
