From Proto-Philippine *dakəp, from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *dakəp, from Proto-Austronesian *dakəp. Cognate with Cebuano dakop (to catch; to arrest), Indonesian and Malay dakap (having one's hands clasped or arms embraced).
