From Egyptian Arabic عِجّة (ʕegga), from Arabic عُجَّة (ʕujja), from ع ج ج (ʕ-j-j) meaning "to be overcrowded or jammed pack", as the meal is typically packed or stuffed with chop-meat and/or various vegetable fillings.
