From New Latin elasticus (elastic), from Ancient Greek as if *ἐλαστής (*elastḗs) for ἐλατής (elatḗs), equivalent to ἐλατήρ (elatḗr, a driver, hurler), from ἐλαύνειν (elaúnein, to drive, set in motion, push, strike, beat out).
