English[edit]

Noun[edit]

electromotive force (countable and uncountable, plural electromotive forces)

  1. (physics) Potential energy (not force) divided by electric charge; measured in volts

Usage notes[edit]

Despite the name, electromotive force is related to potential energy rather than force. To avoid confusion, ISO and IEC standards recommend using the terms source voltage or source tension instead.[1][2]
