Borrowed from Swahili meza, from Omani Arabic ميز (mēz, table), from Persian میز (mêz), from Middle Persian [Book Pahlavi needed] (myʾzd /⁠mēzd⁠/, sacrifice, offering meal; table), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *myázdʰas (sacrificial oblation), from Proto-Indo-European *meyh₁- + *dʰeh₁-. False cognate of Portuguese mesa.
