even up (third-person singular simple present evens up, present participle evening up, simple past and past participle evened up)

  1. (transitive) To make even; to make level.
    • 1895, Robert W. Chambers, The Repairer of Reputations:
      I told him, smiling, that I would get even with him for his mistake, and he laughed heartily, and asked me to call once in a while. I did so, hoping for a chance to even up accounts, but he gave me none, and I told him I would wait.
  2. (intransitive) To become even.
  3. (finance) To secure a profit to offset a previous loss.
