Via other European languages, ultimately borrowed from Latin ēvolūtiō (the act of unrolling, unfolding or opening (of a book)), from ēvolūtus, perfect passive participle of ēvolvō (unroll, unfold), from ē (out of), short form of ex, and volvō (roll).
