Swedish[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From Old Swedish fyrre, from Old Norse fyrri, from Proto-Germanic *furizô, comparative of Proto-Germanic *furi, *furai.

Pronunciation[edit]

  • IPA(key): [²fœ̞rːa]
  • (nonstandard, nonetheless common[1]) IPA(key): [²fɵrːa]

Adjective[edit]

förra (masculine förre)

  1. former, last, previous (the one in a sequence before the present)
Den bilen ser inte något vidare ut, låt oss titta på den förra igen istället
That car doesn't look very nice, let us instead have a look at the last one again
    förra året
    last year
  2. (archaic) first
    Det förra kapitlet
    The first chapter

Usage notes[edit]

  • Just like English last, this adjective can only be used in attributive, definite form (det förra året = the last year), not in indefinite (ett förrt år = a last year) or predicative form (året var förrt = the year was last). For such cases, either use föregående (preceding) or forn (old), or rewrite to definite form (e.g. året var det förra = the year was the last one).
