facility trip (plural facility trips)

  1. A visit by politicians etc. to see the conditions at a certain place, typically with free hospitality.
    • 1965, Tony Gray, Starting from Tomorrow, page 87:
      There was a menu from the Argosy, from that time he and Peggy had gone on a facility trip to Bremerhaven and back. Beluga caviar, milk-fed veal, giant Pacific prawns, truffled foie gras from Périgord, wild rice.
    • 2004, Dick Heckstall-Smith, Pete Grant, Blowing the Blues: Fifty Years Playing the British Blues, page 122:
      There are, however, occasional bouts of genuine hospitality, with no strings or inverted commas attached. Last week, I went on such a facility trip to Germany with Colosseum. All expenses were to be paid, including air fares and hotel bills.
