Unknown. Perhaps from Proto-Germanic *fanją (marsh, swamp) (compare fana) and the Galician suffix of Germanic origin -engo (pertaining to); otherwise from Latin faenum (hay) and the suffix of substrate origin -anco, with irregular preservation of intervocalic /n/.[1]
