Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Germanic *fandōną (to find out), related to *finþaną (to come upon, find), from Proto-Indo-European *pent- (to go, pass, bridge). Akin to Old Frisian fandia, fandlia (West Frisian fanljen), Old Saxon fandōn, Old High German fantōn (German fahnden).
