Borrowed from German Low German Fahrtüg, Fahrtüüg, also Fartüg (in Adelung's High German dictionary, which also has Danish Fartoy), cf. German Fahrzeug (= fahren (to go, drive) +‎ Zeug (gear)), Dutch vaartuig. Equivalent to fare +‎ tøj.
