Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Celtic *woidīti, from Proto-Indo-European *woydéyeti, causative of *weyd- (to see). Cognate with Sanskrit वेदयति (vedayati, announce) and Proto-Germanic *waitijaną (to cause to know, to show).
