Borrowed from Russian фотогра́фія (fotográfija), ultimately a modern coinage based on Ancient Greek φῶς (phôs, light) (combining form φωτ- (phōt-)) and γράφω (gráphō, to scratch, to scrape, to graze; to write) +‎ -ija.
